Asus Transformer Prime shows itself, we all gaze at it's beauty

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 04:47 PM PDT

Android Central

We're getting closer and closer to the official announcement of the Asus Transformer Prime, but if you really, really can't wait then take a look at these leaked shots of the quad-core super tablet.

Bearing passing resemblance to a Macbook Pro, the images have been pulled from the Chinese site that originally leaked them. They go on to show various angles of the Prime, but the lockscreen is the only part of the software on show and it doesn't give any glimpses of any Ice Cream Sandwich goodness I'm afraid.

Coming from the success of the original Transformer, a lot of you are sure to want one of these. Check out some more images after the jump to whet your appetite just a little more.

HTC Raider (Holiday) rumored to come to Rogers, $150 with a 3 year contract

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 03:10 PM PDT

HTC Raider

The HTC Raider (we know it as the Holiday) is coming to Rogers for $149.99 on a three-year contract, according to a tip received by Mobile Syrup.  While a three-year contract is something that just boggles our minds, the Raider is something we can easily get behind.  A 4.5-inch qHD display, 1.2 GHZ dual-core processor, 1GB ram, 8GB internal memory, with an 8MP rear camera and a 1.3MP front camera running on a LTE network will get the attention of just about any smartphone aficionado.

We've been hearing rumors and seeing pictures of an AT&T version for about forever, but still have no official word from Dallas yet.  Maybe you folks north of the border will get first dibs on this one.  Hopefully we'll know the details shortly.

Shadowgun now available in the Android Market for Tegra 2 devices

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 02:19 PM PDT

ShadowGun

Here's what you've been waiting for if your an Android fan and love to play action shooters -- Shadowgun (see our early review) is now available in the Android Market for Tegra 2 devices.  It's got killer graphics (console quality, I kid you not), a great storyline, and will give you hours and hours of gameplay.  It's by far one of the best mobile games on any platform.  I've been playing the press copy for a bit on both the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the LG G2X, and have been itching to get the full version myself.

You'll find download links after the break, as well as the video trailer (it's a must watch).  Shadowgun is $4.99, and runs on Tegra 2 devices with Android 2.2 or higher.

T-Mobile Amaze 4G review

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 01:21 PM PDT

A great phone, for sure -- but is it amazing?

T-Mobile HTC Amaze 4G

A couple weeks into using the HTC Amaze 4G on T-Mobile, we've pretty much decided the most amazing thing about the device isn't the hardware, which of course is stellar. It's not the software, which is a further iteration of HTC Sense. These things are givens, right?

No, instead the most amazing thing about the HTC Amaze 4G is the fact that we're seeing it on T-Mobile at all, just a few months after its older brother, the HTC Sensation 4G, was released.

So what's different? What's new? is it truly amazing? Yes. And no.

The Good

Powerful hardware, and HTC Sense is as good as ever. The camera quality is much-improved, and the hardware shutter buttons and quick access to the camera app are must-haves.

The Bad

Could be too large for some people. The larger plastic battery cover is pretty slick in the hand. Earpiece is a lint trap. The camera app, while better, still has room for improvement.

Conclusion

Easily the best HTC Android smartphone on T-Mobile, with its current hardware and software. The camera is as good as any HTC has done of late. Makes us wonder, however, why T-Mobile's carrying the Amaze 4G as well as the only slightly older HTC Sensation.

Halloween Clock - Give your home screen a spooky Halloween look

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 12:18 PM PDT

Halloween Clock

Even though I'm 30 years old, I still get excited for Halloween. I don't go out trick-or-treating anymore obviously but I still enjoy having a few spooky decorations around and my phone isn't any exception to that. It's all about halloween ringtones, wallpapers and yes -- even clocks. Halloween Clock is one addition to help get you in the 'spirit' of the season:

  • Four different skins to choose from (wood, wrought iron, stone, and brick).
  • Each skin switches to day and night versions on its own (or choose any skin you'd like to remain static).
  • Moon and sun rise and set as the day goes on (or choose your favorite position to remain static).
  • Space for two customizable launchers. App icons look like they're nestled right in the grass!
  • 12 and 24 hour modes.

Set up is easy and it looks great on any device. Halloween Clock is a paid app but coming in at only $1 -- you'll not need to rob any graves to get it. If you're looking to add some nice Halloween style to your device give it a look, download is past the break.

Android 101: Add words to the user dictionary

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 11:55 AM PDT

Android Central

How many times have you typed out your last name only for your phone to attempt to correct it to something else on the device? I think we have all been in that boat, and while some keyboards will remember it, others will not, so let's quickly take a look at how to add words to the user dictionary on the device.

  • Option 1 - Go to settings, then language and keyboard settings, and select user dictionary and then press menu and add
  • Option 2 - Long press the word and then click on Add to Dictionary

Using a third-party keyboard? It may be as easy as tapping your correctly spelled word in the suggestions.

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 07:58 AM PDT

Winamp for Mac

Winamp, Android, and Mac: the forbidden love triangle is finally ready to play nice, thanks to the newly released Winamp for Mac Sync Beta. Now, you'll finally be able to sync your Mac's music with your Android device, just as Winamp has always worked on Windows. If you're new to Winamp, here's the gist: once Winamp is downloaded to your computer, you'll be able to import all of your music with one click. Once imported, you can sync your music wirelessly (or with a wire, if you choose) with your Android and play individual files or entire playlists no matter how far from home you are (your computer will have to remain on for Winamp to work). Winamp's Android app is available for download from the Android Market below, though remember that to begin using the program on your Mac, you'll need Winamp for Mac Sync Beta, available at the source link.

Official Ice Cream Sandwich for the Nexus One won't happen, Google says

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 06:49 AM PDT

Nexus One

Shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, but according to Google's Hugo Barra, as reported by The Telegraph, the Nexus One is just too darn old for an official update to Ice Cream Sandwich. It's a shame, because it's still a great daily driver. But this is that whole "legacy" thing we all have to come to terms with, and it's the reason why we put the Nexus One in our "Maybe, but doubtful" column for our ICS update predictions.

All that said: We completely expect someone to build a full ICS ROM for the Nexus One once the code drops, and SDK ports are already in the works.

Sprint adds 1.3 million subscribers, loss of $310 million in income

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 05:56 AM PDT

Sprint

This is what you'd call a good/bad for Sprint. The Good: Sprint added nearly 1.3 million net subscribers in the third quarter. Most of those, however, were prepaid (485,000) or wholesale or affiliate (835,000) subscribers. Some 304,000 of the subscribers were of the postpaid variety.

And now the Bad: Operating income was at $208 million -- down some $301 million.

This comes, of course, along with the launch of the Samsung Conquer 4G, Motorola Photon 4G and the Samsung Galaxy S II Sprint Epic 4G Touch, plus the Samsung Transform Ultra on Boost Mobile, and the Motorola Triumph and LG Optimus Slider on Virgin Mobile.

The big question is what will happen now that Sprint has the iPhone. Certainly it can't hurt, right?

Apple granted patent on slide to unlock, even though it existed 2 years before they invented it

Posted: 25 Oct 2011 05:43 PM PDT

Slide to unlock

The software patent system is totally askew.  We need to look no further to see this than the recent news that Apple was granted a patent on sliding to unlock a mobile device.  (Edit: It actually was granted back in February, but the case pinged again, and so we're all revisiting it.) It's bad enough that a governing body somewhere actually believes that you or I aren't smart enough to come to the natural conclusion on our own (that's basically what a patent means -- it's a unique idea or process), but the fact that it existed on an old Windows CE device in 2005 was totally overlooked.

I present the Neonode N1m, as reviewed by none other than Tnkgrl.

Youtube link for mobile viewing

Jump to 4:00 if you're impatient.  Now you might ask two things -- why was this patent granted, and does "prior art" really mean anything?  The first is an easy answer, the folks who granted the patent probably never heard of the Neonode N1m (but I'm sure Apple did).  You can't blame them if they didn't know, even if they should have.  The second question is a bit more tricky.  Usually, if prior art can be proven, a patent is invalidated.  Proven is a tough word that means more than one thing to different people.  It should be easy to interpret, but that's not how the legal system in the US works.

It did work as expected in the Netherlands though, and Samsung has already brought the lowly Neonode N1m in front of the court there -- and had Apple's claims over slide to unlock determined to be "trivial and likely invalid", and the court refused to consider them.  I'm sure HTC and Motorola, who are being sued over multiple gesture patents in the US, already have this particular Youtube video bookmarked.  If this patent stands, we all should just go back to this.

The good old days
